About chat.to-go

chat.to-go is a browser-based private group chat where messages travel directly between participants' devices over end-to-end encrypted, peer-to-peer connections. The room key never leaves your devices β€” there is no central server that can read or store the conversation. No account, no app, no phone number required. Open a link in the browser and start chatting. Each invite link admits exactly one device, giving you clear control over who enters the room. Message history is either ephemeral or encrypted on your own device β€” your choice. Disappearing messages and optional room passwords provide additional layers of control. Free, no ads, no tracking. Disclosure: I work on chat.to-go.

chat.to-go β€” Private Group Chat in the Browser

chat.to-go is an indie-built private group chat that runs entirely in the browser. It uses end-to-end encryption over peer-to-peer WebRTC connections, meaning messages travel directly between participants' devices without passing through a central server. The room key never leaves your devices, and there is no server-side message store.

Unlike traditional messaging apps, chat.to-go requires no account, no app installation, and no phone number. You simply open a link in your browser and start chatting. This removes the friction β€” and the identity trail β€” of handing over personal information just to have a private conversation.

Access control is handled through one-time invite links: each link admits exactly one device, so you know who has entered the room. Message history can be set to ephemeral (nothing stored) or device-encrypted (stored only on your own device, encrypted). Disappearing messages and optional room passwords provide additional privacy controls.

chat.to-go is free, with no ads and no tracking. It uses a strict no-referrer policy and is built with a privacy-by-architecture approach rather than relying on promises or policies alone.

It sits alongside tools like Signal and Matrix as a complement for quick private rooms β€” when you need a secure conversation without setting up a group on a platform that requires phone numbers or accounts. It is not a source-protection tool and does not claim to hide IP addresses from peers (WebRTC connections expose IP addresses to other participants unless relayed).

Visit chat.to-go.io to try it β€” no signup, nothing to install.
